# Sponsorship 101 with Jarvis Sam, former CDO of Nike

Research has shown that mentorship and sponsorship are vital pillars for any successful talent strategy—helping to increase employee engagement, retention, and performance.

But while corporate mentorship programs have become increasingly popular over the last few years, sponsorship continues to be underutilized.

During this Q&A with Jarvis Sam, former Chief DEI Officer of Nike — hosted by 10KC CEO Dave Wilkin — you’ll learn more about sponsorship best practices including:

- What is sponsorship? Who can benefit from it?
- How does sponsorship differ from mentorship? Does your org need both?
- What are the benefits of formal sponsorship programs vs. organic sponsorship relationships?
- How do you get started with a formal sponsorship program?
